Electrical Service Panel

100A → 200A
Panel Upgrades.

Your panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. If it's old, undersized, or maxed out, everything else suffers — flickering lights, tripped breakers, no room for an EV charger or mini split. We upgrade it the right way: permitted, inspected, code-compliant, warrantied.

Why You Might Need One

6 Signs It's Time
for an Upgrade.

Most homeowners don't think about their panel until something goes wrong. If any of these sound familiar, your panel is probably overdue for an upgrade.

01

You Have a 100A Panel

Most older homes still have 100-amp service. Modern households with EVs, mini splits, hot tubs, or kitchen renovations need 200A. Period.

02

Breakers Trip Often

If you're regularly resetting breakers when the AC, microwave, or hairdryer kicks on — your panel is undersized for your actual electrical load.

03

Planning an EV Charger

Level 2 EV chargers pull 40–50 amps continuously — that's almost half a 100A panel. Most homes need a panel upgrade first.

04

Adding to Your Home

Kitchen reno, basement finish, master suite addition, mini splits, hot tub? Each adds significant load. Time to make sure your panel can handle it.

05

Old Federal Pacific or Zinsco

If your panel says Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) or Zinsco, it's a known fire hazard. These should be replaced — full stop.

06

Selling Your Home

An undersized or outdated panel shows up in inspection reports and can scare off buyers. A clean 200A panel is a strong selling point.

Worcester Insight

A huge percentage of Worcester-area homes — especially the three-deckers, Colonials, and ranches built before 1990 — still have original 100-amp service. If your home is 25+ years old and you've never upgraded, your panel is the most likely culprit behind any electrical problem.

Common Questions

Panel Upgrade FAQs.

  • Typically 4–6 hours, usually from around 8 AM until 2–3 PM. We coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with your utility (National Grid or Eversource) to minimize downtime. Plan to be home or work remotely for the day.
  • Always. Panel upgrades are permit-required work in Massachusetts. We pull the permit, file it with your town, and arrange the final inspection by your local electrical inspector. You never deal with town hall — and you get the inspection sticker as proof the work meets code.
  • 200A is plenty for most homes — even ones with EV chargers, mini splits, and modern kitchens. Larger homes (4,000+ sqft), homes with electric heat, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), or multiple EVs may need 400A service. We do a full load calculation at the estimate to right-size it.
  • We minimize wall and exterior damage as much as possible — most installs require only minor patching around the panel and meter. We don't do drywall finishing or paint touch-up, but we'll leave clean cuts that are easy for you (or any handyman) to finish. If significant patching is needed, we'll tell you upfront at the estimate.
  • Possibly. The federal Inflation Reduction Act includes tax credits for panel upgrades when paired with qualifying energy improvements (EV chargers, heat pumps, solar). Massachusetts also offers Mass Save rebates for some upgrades. We're electricians, not tax advisors — talk to your accountant or check massave.com / energy.gov for details specific to your situation.
  • Cost depends on your home's specifics — current panel size, location, condition of the service mast, and any extras (sub-panels, surge protection, AFCI/GFCI upgrades). The only way to give you an honest number is to see the job in person. Estimates are free and you'll get a written, itemized quote before any work begins.
