Layered Lighting Design

Why Recessed Beats
a Single Ceiling Fixture.

Most older homes have one fixture in the middle of the ceiling. That's not lighting — that's just hoping. Good lighting is layered.

See It In Action

Three Layers of Light.

Click each layer above to see how it works. Best rooms combine all three — and that's exactly how we plan every install.

Even Light, No Shadows

Multiple cans spaced correctly cast even light across the whole room — not one bright spot in the middle.

Energy Efficient

Modern LED cans use 1/8 the energy of old incandescent fixtures. Last 20+ years. Pay for themselves in saved electricity.

Dimmable & Tunable

Modern LEDs dim smoothly and shift color temperature from warm cozy to bright daylight on the same fixture.

Hides in the Ceiling

No fixtures hanging down. Slim trim. Clean look. Doesn't fight your décor or break a sightline.

Most Rooms Need 4–8 Cans

Spacing matters more than count. We measure your room, plan the layout, and place each can where it'll do the most work — no guesswork.

From Plan to Polish

How a Lighting
Install Goes.

From layout planning to final dim test — every step is intentional.

01

Plan the Layout

We measure the room and plan can spacing for even coverage.

02

Confirm Fixtures

Pick wattage, color temp, dimmable vs. tunable, smart vs. standard.

03

Mark Hole Locations

Tape and pencil. Locate joists. Confirm spots before any cuts.

04

Cut Clean Holes

Hole saws cut perfect circles. Vacuum-attached to keep dust contained.

05

Run Wire Through Attic

Fish wire through joists, walls, or attic — minimum drywall damage.

06

Mount Fixtures

Cans wired and mounted. Trims clipped in. All level and aligned.

07

Install Switches & Dimmers

Lutron or Leviton. Smart or standard. All wired and tested.

08

Test & Cleanup

Every fixture tested. Dimmer ranges checked. Site left spotless.

Minimum Disruption

We Don't Tear Up Your Ceiling.

Most homeowners are nervous about adding recessed lighting because they think we're going to shred the drywall. We don't. Most installs require zero patching beyond the round can holes themselves — which the can trim covers entirely.

We use the attic when accessible, fish wire through the existing wall openings, and pull cable through joist bays without opening up sheetrock. If we do need to make a small access cut (rare), we tell you upfront at the estimate.

  • Vacuum-attached hole saws — almost no dust
  • Drop cloths over furniture & floors
  • Fish wire through joists, no big holes
  • Site cleaned before we leave
  • Power off only as needed
  • Most rooms done in 1–2 days
Common Questions

Lighting FAQs.

  • Spacing matters more than count. The general rule is to space cans roughly 4–6 feet apart and 2–3 feet from the walls — but it depends on ceiling height, room size, fixture wattage, and what the room is used for. A 12×14 living room typically needs 6 cans; a small bathroom might only need 2–3. We measure the room and lay it out properly during the estimate so you don't end up with dim corners or overkill.
  • Modern recessed lighting uses integrated LED modules — the LED is built right into the can or trim. No bulbs to replace ever. They last 20+ years, use about 1/8 the energy of incandescent, and most are dimmable and tunable (you can shift between warm 2700K, neutral 3000K, and bright 4000K daylight on the same fixture, usually via a small switch on the trim). Older retrofit cans that take separate bulbs are still available, but we mostly install integrated LEDs now.
  • Almost always yes. Most modern LED fixtures are dimmable — but not all dimmers play nicely with all LEDs. The wrong combination causes flickering, buzzing, or limited dim range. We use Lutron and Leviton dimmers that are tested compatible with the fixtures we install. If you're keeping existing dimmers, we'll check compatibility first.
  • Yes — that's standard. Whether you have white baffle trim, brushed nickel, black, gimbal directional trims, or shower-rated wet-location trims, we match what you already have so the new install blends in. If you want to upgrade all the trims at the same time (your existing cans are 1990s yellow plastic and you want sleek modern white?), we can swap those too.
  • Most of the time, yes. Smart dimmers like Lutron Caséta work with most existing wiring and don't require a neutral wire. Other brands (Leviton Decora Smart, TP-Link Kasa, etc.) do require a neutral wire in the switch box. Older homes sometimes don't have neutrals at the switch — in those cases we can either run new wire or recommend Caséta. We'll check your wiring during the estimate so you know which option fits before we start.
  • Usually yes in Massachusetts — adding new circuits or extending wiring is permit-required work. Simply replacing existing fixtures is often not. We'll let you know at the estimate which category your job falls into. If a permit is needed, we pull and file it with your town and arrange the inspection — you don't deal with town hall.
  • Cost depends on how many cans, what kind of ceiling (drywall vs. plaster vs. accessible attic above), fixture and dimmer choice, and how the wiring runs. A simple 4-can bedroom job is at the low end. A full first-floor open-concept with 12+ cans, smart dimmers, and a switch reconfiguration is at the higher end. Estimates are free and itemized — you'll know exactly what each piece costs before any work begins.
